Passion: Motoring and cars

Life@Rodyk understands that you review cars. How did this come about?

During my university days I was quite active in the Singapore Motor Sports Association (I had a lot more time on my hands then!). One of my fellow SMSA members was editor of a car magazine called Autonews, and he was looking for another writer for his team. Naturally I jumped at the chance.

A few months after I started contributing to Autonews, the magazine folded, but soon after that I was approached to write for another magazine, Car Singapore. About a year later that folded as well (do you see a trend here?), and around 2001 I started writing for Torque magazine, which thankfully has managed to survive despite my involvement.

In 2005, SPH* bought over Torque magazine and I was drafted in to contribute to the Straits Times too. So now you'll see my articles in Torque as well as (less frequently) the Saturday motoring pages of the Straits Times.

What is it about motoring and cars that gets you excited?

I just love driving - the way a good car responds when you turn the steering wheel, the kick you get when it accelerates - it's a great thrill.

Occasionally I get invited for overseas car launches. These are brilliant - we get flown to the nicest places, and they actually have recce teams to sniff out the best driving roads for us to try the cars on. For a petrolhead, it can't get any better than that.

Based on your knowledge of different makes and models of cars, what would you say is your dream car and why?

The Audi R8. I love its dramatic styling and the sound its V8 engine makes. And the way it goes and handles is just amazing.

Draw us a parallel between motoring /cars and the practice of law.

Car makers are always trying to improve their product, to be the best. And that's what we lawyers are always striving for as well, isn't it? And if you're passionate about these pursuits, there's great satisfaction to be had in immersing yourself in them.

As an experienced lawyer and mentor for young lawyers at Rodyk, what is the one piece of advice you would give them that you wish someone had given you when you were just starting out?

Live a balanced life, find time to love and to laugh. And if you can't, then walk away and do something else.
