Philip Jeyaretnam, SC awarded 'Best Speaker' at Law-Media Debate Litigation & Arbitration

On 21 October 2005 at the Supreme Court Auditorium, speakers representing the legal fraternity and the media industry argued the motion 'The Media Wields More Power Than The Law.' Rodyk Partner Philip Jeyaretnam, SC and team mates Chelva Rajah, SC, Adrian Tan and Jason Chan argued that the law, with its many facets and far-reaching regulatory functions, was more powerful than the media. The media revealed a team including stalwarts such as Viswa Sadasivan, Joe Augustin and Philip Lee, holding back on a 'trump card', later revealed to be the reigning "Queen" of Singapore cabaret - Kumar. A split decision by the panel of judges favoured the media, acknowledging that they took an international view of the issue. Though the lawyers had to accept the decision, with no right of appeal in this instance, we are proud that Philip Jeyaretnam, SC was recognised as the Best Speaker.
